RRS Discovery is owned by the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) and is operated by the National Marine Facilities (NMF) - Sea Systems based at the National Oceanography Centre, Southampton (NOCS). Until 2006, Discovery was the largest general purpose oceanographic research vessel in use in the UK.
Built in Aberdeen in 1962, replacing an older ship of the same name, she has completed over 300 science cruises. In 1992, her refit included lengthening the original hull by ten metres, and installing a completely new superstructure and engines. Discovery is expected to stay in service until 2011.
She has extensive lifting/handling capabilities and large open working decks. Extra facilities, such as laboratory containers or bolt-on winches, can be added easily. She is fitted with a wide range of scientific equipment, and the onboard laboratory facilities are impressive. Research activities can include seismic research, geological sampling, physical oceanography, chemistry, and trawling, as well as deploying large pieces of equipment and instruments.
Discovery sails worldwide and can operate for over 45 days between ports. She can accommodate up to 28 scientific staff.
In addition to the details provided in the CARBON-OPS data inventory, more information about RRS Discovery cruises is available via the UK Cruise Inventory and the Marine Facilities Planning web site.
